Event Blog #3 - Light, Color, Motion: The Belly of the Beast
The Belly of the Beast - Marko Peljhan
During Marko Peljhan's presentation, The Belly of the Beast, we looked at a lot of different art styles and artists who paved the way for technology and art as one. Technology and art was a topic we have covered during our entire time throughout this course. We have looked at medical technology, robotics, and even nanotechnology. I think that when we really put those ideas into perspective as to what we looked at in this Light, Color, and Motion presentation, we saw art pieces that had been done using technology. The crossover we saw here is a lot more apparent in the technology and art styles than when we looked at medical technology and art or nanotechnology and art. My perspective on those was a lot bigger when it came to connecting those dots, whereas with this concept, we were looking at more art pieces that were on display rather than things we are seeing in science or everyday life.
I think one of the major art pieces that stood out to me that Peljhan had brought to our attention was Cork Marcheschi's, "Waiting for Donna #3", art piece. This was a piece that brought technology and art together so closely, that I was mesmerized by it while we watched the short video of the display during Peljhan's presentation. I think that this was one of the few pieces of art that I have seen that has really made me think. This piece brought together the use of light, energy, and technology all together to create a piece that made the viewer think deeper about what the meaning behind the installation was. I think that a lot of Marcheschi's work that I researched after was all very intriguing to me. I love the use of bright colors and shapes that draw the viewer in. I think that artwork like this, that does not have a lot going on, but has a hidden message behind it are some of the most important pieces of art because they really make the viewer question and think about what is going on.
